Mac Kilduff, Staff Writer

4/29/2010 - Saint Joseph residents and police officers are mourning the death of Officer Bradley Thomas Arn who was killed in a shootout Monday.

Residents gathered for a candle light vigil as friends, fellow officers and loved ones sobbed over the unfortunate loss of the officer.

A makeshift memorial full of flowers, pictures and memories sits on the corner of 22nd and Frederick near where Arn had been killed by an unidentified gunman.

“He will be sorely missed,” says one St. Joseph resident, “we will never forget him and we pray for his family.”

The last police officer killed in the line of duty was struck by a vehicle in 1991. The police dept. plans to raise money for Arn’s family and to buy a plaque in his memory.

Police and DA crack down on neo-Nazis

Mac Kilduff, Staff Writer

Local police are attempting to crack down on the rise in neo-Nazi skinhead activity in the area after the two young men murdered their family.

Allentown and the eastern Penn. area have had issues with skinheads in the past but most of the issues involved underage drinking, noise complaints and violent confrontations.

The recent murder of the Freeman family by family members Bryan and David Freeman has sparked police to attempt to crack down on groups recruiting local youth.

Police plan to keep close eyes on skinhead activity for any disturbing or illegal behavior in order to quell the rise in recruitment and violent activity.

“These groups provide alcohol and attempt to brainwash minors in order to gain their allegiance,” said District Attorney Michael Blu, “With cooperation from police and local neighborhood watch organizations we plan on reducing the impact these groups.”

There were 14 arrests last year related to violent crimes committed by skinheads and 48 parties, which involved underage drinking, were dispersed, leading to several arrests.

“We work hard already but it’s time we push a little bit harder to avoid further confrontations and tragedies,” said Allentown Police Chief Bill Johnson.

  • Board President Elton Fay is against year round schooling due to students on different schedules.
  • Candidate Larry Dorman wants to eliminate overcrowding and is against the plan of year round schooling. He wants to increase teacher pay as well but is worried about money.
  • Kerry Corino reminds candidates that public schools cannot choose their students and believes the budget is an issue.
